Hi, Tim Roberts here. For assignment 1 I intend to analyse the forum of the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT).

The forum can be found here

Under this umbrella there are actually a number of forums. The one I have chosen is the Auckland Transport Discussion. As can be seen from the main page, a number of other forums are available which cover other parts of the country.

This forum is not related to my teaching activities, but from what I understand this is not a requirement. It is a forum that I have been a member of for a number of years, and one to which I contribute on an irregular basis.

This forum was originally maintained by the Auckland Regional Council, and was taken over by the CBT when the council decided the forum was outside of their core business.

The target group is anyone who is interested in public and alternative transport in the Auckland area. The benefit members gain from it is the satisfaction that comes from sharing knowledge and ideas with others, and the opportunity to learn from other members who, due to personal interests or their work situations know a great deal about many of the topics that are discussed.

    My blog is here

Looks like a useful community to analyse, Tim – the tools available seem a little limited (ie the forum) but that shouldn’t be a problem. And it sounds like you know the community well already so that will give you a good insight into its effectiveness.

The actual link is http://groups.google.com/group/edtsg but it is not open to the public so you will need to request access in order to see it.

Melvin, have you now made your draft available for others to read on your own blog or wiki site?

    Hi All
The community I am analyzing is http://www.instructables.com , and the community of interest is anyone who wants to know how to do or construct something, or who wants to share their knowledge of how to make things.
I have started my outline for assignment1 on my blog at https://fredengelblog.wordpress.com . I would be grateful for any feedback from anyone in the group. It is still a work in progress.
    thanks
    Fred

    Hi Bob

Read your blog and was impressed, you made a great observation that your community is effective as it connected outside it’s immediate purpose by checking members in Chch were ok. I have now gained some understanding of the flight sim sites that my husband spends time on!

I couldn’t work out how to post on your blog directly, do you know how this is done?

    cheers
    Lorraine

    Hi Fred,

That sounds like a really useful website, although I couldn’t access it from on-campus. Are you able to? It’s interesting that they create two tiers of membership (paid and unpaid). Do you think that has any negative effect on members?

    HI Bob,

I had a look at your assignment and i like the way you have laid it out by making a point and then quoting a reference to back your point up. I know what you mean about your pictures always looking second-rate. I often think that too when I think about posting a photo on the transport discussion forum. Other people’s photos always look so much better than mine! I guess a measure of the community-mindedness of the forum would be how members would respond to you posting a screenshot. Would it be constructive or critical?

    Tim

    Hi Wendy,

I’ve had a look at your assignment and the AllNurses site. I like the way you broke your assignment up into pages and linked to each page (unlike me – I just stuck all mine on the same page).
